History of EMDR

EMDR was discovered by Francine Shapiro in the U.S. for the treatment of traumatised people. She developed it in the 1980s.

Since then a lot of studies show that EMDR works very well and has long lasting effects.

It was successfully tested on Vietnam veterans where other conventional treatments like psychotherapy failed.

 

EMDR nowadays

With the very effective meaning fast and stable therapy success EMDR is already established in the U.S. and in Europe as one of the most potent methods to treat traumatised people.

How does EMDR work?

One of the keys to this effective method is a certain kind of eye movement during the session. Simply moving one´s eyes in a certain direction at a certain speed for a certain time.

This is similar to REM (Rapid Eye Movement) in your sleep which is also to process what you experienced during the day.

 

EMDR english as a kind of exposure therapy

EMDR is a variation of exposure therapy. In the session the person has to go to the memory of the trauma. To help the person connect to the traumatic experience additional sentences are used.

EMDR is a combination of psychotherapy and body therapy in a certain way.
